With COVID-19 limiting in-person visits, independent book shops are turning to online solutions to support their businesses and their authors. So, if you have some free time, please join me for my very first online author chat at Foxtale Bookshoppe this Thursday!
One of the things I'll be discussing is where fact meets fiction in When the Apricots Bloom. Chosen as the Target Book Club pick for February and a Buzzfeed recommended historical fiction read, the novel is inspired by my experiences living in Baghdad under the dictator Saddam Hussein - and particularly my complicated friendship with a woman who I later discovered was an informant for the regime's secret police - reporting back on my every move. Baghdad's rich art scene was another real life inspiration that made it's way onto the pages, as well as the city's amazing Mutanabbi book market.
