Statue of an Iraqi pilot atop a downed Iranian war jet. More than one million people died in the war between Iran and Iraq, fought from 1980-88, for control of the Shatt al Arab waterway, which leads to the Persian Gulf. The bloody and vicious war ended with no clear winner, and the two countries now share control of the Shatt al Arab.
